Increasingly frequent and intense events fuelled by climate change are resulting in devastating long-lasting impacts. Loss of life and health, food insecurity and famine, loss of biodiversity, increased displacement, social, economic and environmental losses are being felt throughout the world, undermining progress towards sustainable development. Against this backdrop, disaster-related data and statistics are critical to understanding root causes, drivers and impacts of disasters, in order to make informed development decisions. While the importance of data is widely acknowledged, challenges remain in the application of these data for evidence-based decision-making.
