01In brief

The short answer.

The Systems Science and Modelling community is the network of systems scientists and modellers who contribute expertise, review and data to its work on methods and modelling, risk management and systemic risk, and research and evidence. They take part through moderated subject groups and working groups. Rules apply equally to all, interests are declared, and taking part gives no authority over findings.

Specialist community: a working group from charter to sunsetA charter sets the question and the code of conduct; members join with declared interests; a workplan produces deliverables that are reviewed and credited; the group reports and sunsets or renews. Design of the process, not a record of a run.

03Geography

People and exposure in North America.

For specialist community, in GCRI's spatial-intelligence reading, the map opens on population density, night lights and true-colour imagery with relief in 3D and true colour from NASA GIBS, framed on North America; every other NASA layer, live feed and forecast waits in the layer list.

The interactive map needs JavaScript; the layer list and sources are below.

05Who the field needs

The professions that hold part of the systems modelling picture.

The community joins systems modellers, statisticians, domain modellers from every platform, decision analysts and research software engineers. They look here for consistent coupling and honest validation. Methods include complex systems and network science; topics include agent-based modelling. Domain modellers join because coupling exposes assumptions their own models never had to state.

  • Systems modellers.
  • Statisticians and uncertainty specialists.
  • Domain modellers from each field.
  • Decision analysts.
  • Research software engineers.
06Rules

How the community works.

  • Moderation follows published rules, applied the same way to everyone.
  • Personal data is used to run the community and is not shared for marketing.
  • Taking part gives no authority, appointment or influence over findings.
  • Conflicts of interest are declared before work begins.
07Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Community of practiceA group of people who share a concern or a craft and learn to do it better by interacting regularly; the term comes from Lave and Wenger's work on situated learning.
Conflict of interestA situation in which financial, professional or personal interests could compromise, or appear to compromise, judgement in research or review.
Personal dataAny information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person, directly or indirectly, such as a name, an identification number, location data or an online identifier, as the EU General Data Protection Regulation defines it.
VerificationConfirming that a system meets its specified requirements, often summarised as building it right.

Bring your expertise to this field.

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
