Programmes and projects: the policy cycleA problem reaches the agenda, options are formulated and appraised, consultation tests them, the mandate holder decides, implementation and monitoring follow, and evaluation feeds the next agenda. Design of the process, not a record of a run.

01In brief

The short answer.

Systems Science and Modelling programmes organize its work on methods and modelling, risk management and systemic risk, and research and evidence at three levels: global priorities, regional applications and country work. Each programme shows its recorded status, from exploring and forming to active, paused or archived, and a plan is never presented as an activity. Countries take part through their national programmes and the Consortium Secretariat.

02Geography

Hazards and exposure in North America.

For programmes and projects, in GCRI's spatial-intelligence reading, the map opens on true-colour imagery, flood water and night lights with relief in 3D, framed on North America; every other NASA layer, live feed and forecast waits in the layer list.

The interactive map needs JavaScript; the layer list and sources are below.

04Three levels

How systems modelling work is organised globally, regionally and nationally.

Modelling communities organise globally through intercomparison projects, regionally through research networks and nationally around models used by government.

  • Global: intercomparison projects and shared protocols.
  • Regional: regional modelling networks.
  • National: national models used in policy.
05Status

Every programme shows where it stands.

A programme is shown as exploring, forming, constituted, active, paused or archived, according to its record. A plan is never presented as an activity.

06Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
ProgrammeA group of related projects and activities managed together to obtain benefits that managing them separately would not, in the sense the Project Management Institute's programme standard uses.
Programme statusThe recorded state of a programme on Nexus pages: exploring, forming, constituted, active, paused or archived. A plan is never presented as an activity.
Country ownershipThe principle that a country leads its own development policies and strategies and coordinates the actions that support them, set out in the Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness.
ModelA simplified representation of a system used to understand it or explore its behaviour under stated assumptions.
09Questions

Questions and answers.

How does a country take part?
Through its national programme. Country enquiries go to the Consortium Secretariat at contact@therisk.global or a regional desk.
