Global Risks Forum 2025

Building a Better World Together: The Future of Humanitarian Action

Summary

The event will bring together humanitarian partners to discuss how humanitarian action contributes to the future of humanity and to the UN Charter, take stock of opportunities and challenges and consider collective approaches for the future.

Description

The High-Level Side Event will convene Member States, regional grouping, the UN, NGOs, the private sector and key humanitarian and development partners to discuss how global humanitarian action aligns with the principles and values of the UN Charter and contributes to the future of humanity. It will assess current challenges and explore multilateral approaches to ensure humanitarian action is fit for the future and capable of responding effectively.

Discussions will focus on supporting people affected by crises and forced displacement, upholding international law and ensuring accountability to the communities we serve, particularly youth, women, girls and people with disabilities. The event will explore how partnerships can strengthen technical capacities and political will to respond to growing global crises, reduce disaster risks and impacts, build resilience to climate and other shocks, and pave way for sustainable peace and development.

It will also call for concrete actions to drive forward solutions to reduce human suffering, tackle the root causes of crises and displacement, address gender-based violence and urge Member States to promote respect for IHL. The event complements the Pact for the Future and contributes to achieving the SDGs, ensuring no crisis-affected community is left behind.

Side Event organized by: Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) secretariat on behalf of the following IASC members: UNHCR, UNICEF, OHCHR, IFRC, ICVA and InterAction and Member States: African Union, Saudi Arabia and Slovenia

To generate additional opportunities for the engagement of all actors, the Secretary-General of the United Nations is convening the Summit of the Future Action Days on 20 and 21 September 2024 at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Bringing together representatives from Member States, civil society, private sector, academia, local and regional authorities, youth, and many more, the Action Days will provide an opportunity for broad engagement and inclusion. These stakeholders have all played a key role in shaping the Pact for the Future and will be critical to its implementation.

Side events provide further insights and opportunities for multi-stakeholder collaboration.
