01In brief

The short answer.

Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems research is the evidence work behind the platform: questions such as model evaluation and agentic systems, answered with artificial intelligence and machine learning as well as AI evaluation and assurance engineering and reviewed before publication. Every result carries an evidence label, from observed to modelled or expert judgement, and missing data is shown as missing, never filled silently.

Design of the process, not a record of a run.

03Geography

Connected activity in East Asia.

For research and evidence, in GCRI's spatial-intelligence reading, the map opens on true-colour imagery, night lights and land cover with true colour from NASA GIBS, framed on East Asia; 3 further NASA layers wait in the list.

The interactive map needs JavaScript; the layer list and sources are below.

05Open questions

What AI research cannot yet answer well enough for decisions.

AI risk research has to keep pace with capability. The agenda concentrates on evaluation, agents, uses in public services and science, and the system-level effects that single-model testing misses.

  • Which evaluations predict real-world failure, rather than benchmark performance? See model evaluation.
  • How should agents that act through tools be scoped, monitored and stopped? See agentic systems.
  • What evidence should a public service require before using AI in decisions about people? See AI and public services.
  • How do autonomous physical systems fail in mixed human-machine environments? See autonomous physical systems.
  • What is the energy and water footprint of AI compute, and where does it concentrate? See compute and energy.

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Research integrityConduct of research in line with principles of reliability, honesty, respect and accountability, as the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity sets them out.

ReproducibilityObtaining consistent results using the same data and analysis code as the original study.

Can I propose a research question?
Yes. Write to contact@therisk.global with the question, the context and who would use the answer. A proposal receives a reference; it does not commit the platform to the work.
