Ensemble scheduling across tiers
Ensemble members are packaged in pinned containers and placed by the control plane on cloud, private or edge capacity according to data class, deadline and allocation, with every placement logged.
The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI)
High-performance, cloud and edge computing sets how fast, at what resolution and how many times a risk model can run. In this field it is also a dependency to manage: placement by data location and policy, reproducible environments across hardware, and capacity that holds up during the events the models are about.

High-performance, cloud and edge computing sets how fast, at what resolution and how many times a risk model can run. It is also a dependency to manage: placing work by data location and policy, keeping environments reproducible across hardware, and keeping capacity during the events the models are about.
High-performance, cloud and edge computing provide the processing and storage capacity for simulation, analytics and digital services. They are both an enabler of risk analysis and a critical dependency for society. In data and compute and methods and modelling, computing capacity determines how fast and at what resolution risks can be modelled. Its concentration is itself a systemic dependency for finance, health and government services. The canonical description is on the STEM Commons.

Analysis code is sent to the institution that holds restricted records, runs under that owner's policy on its own infrastructure, and returns only permitted aggregates, with the code version and output check recorded.
Field nodes carry a reduced model, its data and a local policy cache, keep working through loss of connectivity, and reconcile with the central record afterwards, flagging conflicts for a person to resolve.
Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| High-performance computing | Aggregated computing power, typically clusters with fast interconnects, used for large simulations. |
| Container image digest | A cryptographic identifier of an exact software environment, used to reproduce a run. |
| Degraded mode | Operation with reduced capability when connectivity or power is limited. |
Urban demand centres and the hubs that anchor digital and data infrastructure, shown for Nigeria as an example geography for this subject.
Data from the source register feeds the methods; calibration and an independent test gate the estimate and its limits; the decision stays with the competent authority.
Fig. 01Nodes carry their type, metrics and state; connectors show what feeds what; the gates are the validation steps; the timeline is one application. Design of the method's use, not a record of a run.
Datasets and records used by high-performance, cloud and edge computing on this platform, with the role each plays and the label its values carry. Sources are listed in the source register.
| Data | Role | Label |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduler accounting records | Queue, runtime and resource use by workload | OBSERVED |
| Power and cooling telemetry | Energy per workload | OBSERVED |
| Container image digests and build records | Environment reproducibility | OBSERVED |
| Provider status and incident records | Availability and dependency analysis | REPORTED |
| Grid carbon-intensity data | Emissions attribution | ESTIMATED |
Systems are tested through benchmarks, load testing and failover exercises. Numerical reproducibility is checked across hardware and software configurations.
| Check | How it is done |
|---|---|
| Cross-platform reproduction | Reference runs are repeated on different hardware and compilers, and differences are compared against a stated tolerance |
| Failover exercise | A tier or region is withdrawn on schedule, and recovery time and lost work are recorded |
| Placement audit | A sample of placements is checked against data-class and jurisdiction rules |
| Benchmark regression | Standard workloads are re-run after each platform change to catch performance and numerical regressions |
Concentration in few providers or regions creates shared points of failure. Energy, water and supply chain constraints limit capacity growth.
Data and Compute stewards high-performance, cloud and edge computing for the Consortium and reviews how it is applied across platforms.
The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
