NXS-EWS

NXS-EWS (multi-hazard monitoring and warning) supports multi-hazard early warning: forecast verification, impact-based warning support and dissemination readiness for the authorities that issue warnings. It issues none itself.

03The problem it addresses

A forecast is not a warning, and a warning is not action.

NXS-EWS is defined in system profile NRS-S8 of the Nexus Standards. The warning chain runs from risk knowledge through monitoring and forecasting, dissemination and communication, to preparedness and response. Failures cluster at the joins: forecasts not translated into impacts, warnings that do not reach the last mile, thresholds not tied to action.

  • Verification of forecasts against observations.
  • Impact-based warning support linked to exposure.
  • Readiness of dissemination channels, including CAP.

06Rooms

The ten rooms of NXS-EWS.

NXS-EWS has the eight rooms every Foundry system shares, set to its own authority, and two specialist rooms, Forecast Verification and Warning Desk. Each is described by the work it is designed for; the public register records NXS-EWS as declared, not deployed.

Authorised projects only.

Access requires an authorised project with an accountable owner, data terms and a review plan. Enquiries go to the contact form.

08Risk Academy

Where NXS-EWS subjects are taught.

Risk Academy, led by the Nexus Consortium, teaches the subjects practised in NXS-EWS in these disciplines; the Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI) links to the Academy as a partner and does not provide its courses.
