STEM foundation of Water Nexus

The science, technology, engineering and mathematics Water Nexus rests on. Each method has a canonical page in the STEM Commons, hosted by GCRI, and a page here on how it is applied in this field.

01In brief

The short answer.

The Water Nexus STEM foundation is the set of canonical methods its findings depend on, from hydrology and water science to uncertainty quantification and model validation. For the Consortium, Water Nexus stewards hydrology and water science as well as water and environmental engineering. Each method has a canonical STEM Commons page and a page here on its use in the water field.

03Geography

Water security in Central Asia.

Rivers, lakes and how far each division sits from mapped surface water, shown for Central Asia as an example geography for this subject.

05Method mix

Why water needs this combination of methods.

Water risk needs a hydrological core (hydrology, extreme value statistics, forecasting), observation (Earth observation, sensors, geospatial methods), spatial statistics to move between gauges and basins, uncertainty quantification to carry errors to decisions, and environmental engineering for the infrastructure that delivers water.

06Why it matters

Grounding makes claims checkable.

When a finding names the methods it depends on, a reader can see its assumptions and limits, and an expert in that method can challenge it.

TermDefinition
STEM CommonsThe shared reference of science, technology, engineering and mathematics methods for the Nexus network, hosted by GCRI, with one canonical page per method and a named steward platform.
Steward platformThe platform that maintains the canonical description of a method in the STEM Commons and reviews how other platforms apply it.
Hydrology and water scienceHydrology studies the movement, distribution and quality of water across the land surface, subsurface and atmosphere.
Water and environmental engineeringWater and environmental engineering designs systems for water supply, wastewater treatment, drainage and pollution control.
