Publish

Publishing is where an analysis becomes citable: an edited text, its evidence labels, its uncertainty, its version and the route for anyone to challenge it.

01In brief

The short answer.

Publish is step six of the eight-step Nexus cycle: the step at which reviewed findings are published in Nexus Reports with their methods and limits. It is owned by Nexus Reports. At this step GCRI edits Nexus Reports and publishes findings with their limits, and the decision at the end of the cycle stays with the competent authority.

02Geography

Systemic exposure in Nigeria.

Where people and networks concentrate, the exposure through which shocks travel between systems, shown for Nigeria as an example geography for this subject.

04Editorial path

What happens between a result and a report.

  • A named editor checks that each claim carries its evidence label and that the uncertainty language is consistent across the text.
  • Review by people who did not do the work, chosen for the methods the finding depends on.
  • Figures and maps are checked against the build that produced them; an illustration is captioned as one.
  • Limits are written into the body, not a footnote: what the analysis cannot say, and where it would be wrong to apply it.

The series and their methods are on Nexus Reports; GCRI edits the series and answers for what they publish.

05After publication

Versions, corrections and retractions.

A correction is a new version with its history, linked from the old one. Errors that change a conclusion are flagged at the top of the text. Concerns go to corrections, and the integrity rules are on editorial integrity. No funder, member or contributor can buy or block a finding.

07Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Peer reviewEvaluation of a work by independent experts in the field before publication.
Version of recordThe fixed version of a work that a publisher formally declares published; later changes appear as dated corrections or new versions, never as silent edits, in the sense NISO's journal article versions recommendation uses.
Editorial independenceThe condition in which editors decide what is published on the validity and relevance of the work, free from interference by owners, funders or sponsors, as ICMJE and COPE guidance describe it.

Start with an enquiry.

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
