Materials science and chemistry

Materials science and chemistry study the composition, structure and properties of substances and how they react and degrade. They inform the safety of industrial processes, the durability of infrastructure and the availability of critical materials. Advanced Industry and Robotics stewards this page for the Nexus Consortium.

01In brief

The short answer.

Materials science and chemistry study the composition, structure and properties of substances and how they react and degrade. Materials and chemical knowledge supports hazard classification, infrastructure lifetime assessment and substitution planning for scarce inputs. In the Nexus Consortium, Advanced Industry and Robotics stewards its canonical page, and 3 other platforms apply it, including Energy Nexus as well as Trade and Strategic Resources.

02Geography

Systemic exposure in the Gulf.

Where people and networks concentrate, the exposure through which shocks travel between systems, shown for the Gulf as an example geography for this subject.

03The method

What materials science and chemistry covers.

  1. 01

    Core methods

chemical analysis and spectroscopy; materials characterisation; corrosion and degradation testing; computational chemistry; life cycle assessment; toxicological screening.

  2. 02

    Data and instruments

spectrometers and chromatographs; electron microscopes; accelerated ageing chambers; materials property databases; environmental monitoring samples.

  3. 03

    Validation

Measurements are traceable to reference materials and verified through interlaboratory comparison. Simulations are benchmarked against experimental data.

  4. 04

    Limits

Laboratory ageing tests may not reproduce long-term field conditions. Combined exposures and novel substances lack characterisation.

  5. 05

    Use in risk decisions

Materials and chemical knowledge supports hazard classification, infrastructure lifetime assessment and substitution planning for scarce inputs. It links industrial accidents and pollution to health and supply chain risk.

04Reference practice

Chemical and materials risk is governed by hazard classification and supply data.

ReferenceWhat it sets
Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (UN GHS)Hazard classes and communication
EU Seveso III DirectiveMajor-accident hazards involving dangerous substances
USGS Mineral Commodity SummariesProduction and reserves of mineral commodities
Basel ConventionTransboundary movement of hazardous waste
05In systemic risk work

Materials link chemistry to supply chains.

Materials science enters systemic analysis in two ways: the hazard of substances in storage, transport and process, and the availability of materials that energy, digital and defence systems depend on. Substitution is the key question for the second: whether an alternative material exists, at what performance penalty and on what timescale.

  • Distinguish reserves from resources; reserves depend on price and technology.
  • Assess processing concentration as well as mining concentration.
  • Include Natech risk where hazardous materials meet natural hazards.
  • Applications on Trade and Strategic Resources and Advanced Industry and Robotics.
07Stewardship

Who maintains this page.

Advanced Industry and Robotics stewards materials science and chemistry: it keeps this description current and reviews how the method is applied across the platforms.

08Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Thermal runawayA self-heating reaction in a battery cell that can spread to neighbouring cells and cause fire or explosion.
Critical mineralA mineral essential to economic or security needs whose supply is at risk, listed by agencies such as the USGS.
Insulation ageingThe gradual breakdown of insulating materials in equipment such as transformers, driven mainly by heat.
Material flow analysisAn accounting of the stocks and flows of a material through an economy.

11Questions

Questions and answers.

Why does one institution host every method page?
GCRI hosts the STEM Commons so that each method has one canonical description. Platforms link to it rather than repeat it, which keeps definitions consistent.
How do I suggest a correction to a method page?
Write to integrity@therisk.global with the passage and the reason.

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
