Research integrity

Research integrity is what makes evidence worth using: honest methods, independent review, results reported whether they please anyone or not, and errors corrected openly. The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI) sets out how its review roles work, how reproducibility is supported, why negative results are published and how corrections are made. These rules apply to every funder, sponsor, host and participant, and no support can buy a finding. This page is part of science and methods.

01In brief

The short answer.

Research integrity is what makes evidence worth using: honest methods, independent review, results reported whether they please anyone or not, and errors corrected openly. GCRI sets out how its review roles work, how reproducibility is supported, why negative results are published and how corrections are made, and the rules bind every funder, sponsor, host and participant.

02Geography

Systemic exposure in Indonesia.

Where people and networks concentrate, the exposure through which shocks travel between systems, shown for Indonesia as an example geography for this subject.

03Review roles

Who does what before a result is released.

Each role is distinct, and one person does not hold two roles on the same work where that would compromise independence.

RoleResponsibilitySafeguard
AuthorsDesign the study, analyse data, report results and limitationsContributions recorded; authorship follows contribution
Domain reviewersCheck methods, data and conclusionsDeclared conflicts; a conflicted reviewer does not sign acceptance
Editorial reviewCheck clarity, evidence labels, rights and disclosuresRelease follows review, not publicity deadlines
Source ownersConfirm the use of their dataOriginal source authority is retained
04Four commitments

What integrity requires in practice.

  1. 01

    Reproducibility

Data, code and parameters are recorded so that results can be repeated, within the rights of each source.

  2. 02

    Negative results

Null and negative findings are published. Research terms keep negative findings and independent scrutiny possible.

  3. 03

    Disclosure

Funding, review and conflicts are disclosed with each publication.

  4. 04

    Corrections

Anyone can challenge a public finding. A correction creates a new recorded version, never a silent edit, as set out under corrections and concerns.

05Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Research integrityConduct of research in line with principles of reliability, honesty, respect and accountability, as the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity sets them out.
Research misconductFabrication, falsification or plagiarism in proposing, performing, reviewing or reporting research, the core definition used in most national codes.
Null resultA finding of no detectable effect, which still informs future campaigns when published.
ReproducibilityObtaining consistent results using the same data and analysis code as the original study.
06Independence

No one can buy a finding.

No funding, sponsorship, membership or hosting buys a finding, a ranking, the suppression of a limitation or influence over a scientific conclusion. How conflicts are handled is described under independence and conflicts, and editorial standards under scientific and editorial integrity. Lab-specific practice is set out at Nexus Labs research integrity.

Integrity concerns can be raised by anyone, without membership, at integrity@therisk.global.

07Questions

Questions and answers.

How do I raise a concern about research misconduct?
Write to integrity@therisk.global with the publication or project and the facts you can share. The concern is reviewed by someone not involved in the work, and the acknowledgement gives a reference.
Are AI tools allowed in GCRI research?
Yes, when their use is disclosed and validated. AI-drafted text or analysis is not reviewed work until qualified reviewers have checked it, and authors remain responsible.
Does GCRI publish results that funders dislike?
Yes. Findings are accepted on method, funding is disclosed and no support buys the suppression of a result or a limitation.
What happens to a retracted result?
The record stays visible with a clear notice of retraction and the reason, so that readers who cited it can see what changed.
Who reviews research involving people?
Studies involving human participants follow the ethics review required by the institutions and jurisdictions involved, with consent and data protection set out before work begins.

Start with an enquiry.

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
