Innovation programmes

Innovation programmes at The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI) are designed to find, test and carry forward technologies that solve real resilience problems: through open challenges, controlled tests and support pathways that end in evidence a buyer or authority can examine. This page sets out how a challenge would run, what support is designed to include and the boundaries that keep testing honest. No challenge or test call is approved and open yet, so none is listed. 01In brief

The short answer.

GCRI innovation programmes are designed to find, test and carry forward technologies that solve real resilience problems, through open challenges, controlled tests and support pathways that end in evidence a buyer or authority can examine. Each stage leaves a record, testing is not certification, and no challenge is open yet.

Scoping to review.

03Geography

Systemic exposure in India.

Where people and networks concentrate, the exposure through which shocks travel between systems, shown for India as an example geography for this subject.

04Pathway

From a challenge to a transition recommendation.

Each stage leaves a record, so that a buyer, an authority or a critic can see how a candidate was chosen, how it was tested and what the test did and did not show.

  1. 01

    Challenge

An approved challenge states the problem, the users, the conditions and the selection criteria.

  2. 02

    Selection

Proposals receive a documented selection decision, never one that depends on a contribution.

  3. 03

    Test

Selected candidates are tested under the Labs protocol. See Labs gateway.

  4. 04

    Evidence

Measured evaluation, failure cases and interoperability findings are recorded.

  5. 05

    Transition

A transition recommendation names the competent next owner, if any.

05Who it is for

Teams that can bring a working candidate.

Startups

SMEs and startups

Small teams with a candidate technology and the capacity to support a test.

Providers

Technology providers

Established providers testing interoperability and behaviour under representative conditions.

Research

Research teams

University and institute teams moving a method from research towards use.

06Boundaries

What innovation support is not.

  • Testing is not certification, a regulatory sandbox or a procurement status.
  • Precompetitive work never shares competitors' confidential information.
  • Support does not include funding or investment; finance-readiness questions are led by The Global Risks Alliance (GRA), which does not invest.
  • Rights in background technology stay with their owners under a rights schedule.
07Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Public procurement of innovationPublic purchasing of solutions not yet on the market, or new to the buyer.
TestbedA controlled setting, from a lab rig to a field site or sandbox, for trying a technology before it meets real conditions of use.
Technology readiness levelA scale from basic principles to proven operation that describes how mature a technology is.
Valley of deathThe funding and capability gap between a research result and a product ready for investment.
08Status

No approved challenge is open.

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. Teams can register interest through Technology and infrastructure providers. Wider context is on Innovation and technological change, and GRA's view of financial technology on Financial technology and transformation.

09Questions

Questions and answers.

Is there prize money or funding?
No challenge is open, and none is described with funding. Any support would be stated in a challenge's published terms.
Who owns what we bring to a test?
Background rights stay with you. A rights schedule agreed before the test separates background material, joint results and third-party material.
Can a test lead to adoption by a government?
A transition recommendation names a competent next owner where one exists. Adoption, procurement and regulation remain decisions of that owner under its own rules.
Will results be public?
Results are published where rights allow, including failure cases. The rights schedule says what can be released.

Start with an enquiry.

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
