Universities and researchers

Universities, research institutes and laboratories can collaborate with The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI) on research, independent review and methods. Collaboration starts from a research protocol and agreed terms for contributions, rights and publication. Ethics review follows the requirements of the institutions and jurisdictions involved, and research terms always keep negative findings and independent scrutiny possible. This page sets out the routes, the ethics and publication rules and what each party contributes. It is part of Work with GCRI.

01In brief

The short answer.

03Kinds of collaboration

Three ways to work together.

Each starts with a written protocol and agreed terms.

Research

Joint research

Studies on shared questions, browsable in the research library once released.

Review

Independent review

Review of GCRI methods and findings by researchers with managed conflicts.

Methods

Methods and teaching

Contributions to method pages in the STEM Commons and to learning routes.

04Terms

What is agreed at the start.

  1. 01

    Research protocol

Questions, methods, data, roles and timeline.

  2. 02

    Resource decision

What each party contributes, including any computing or data access, and on what terms.

  3. 03

    Rights

Background intellectual property, joint results, third-party material and protected community knowledge are treated separately.

  4. 04

    Publication route

Where and how results are published, authorship by contribution and the review that precedes release.

06Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Research ethics approvalApproval of a study protocol by an independent ethics committee before data collection involving people.
Contributor role statementA structured record of each person's part in a research output, often using the CRediT taxonomy of fourteen roles maintained by NISO.
Open accessFree, immediate online availability of research outputs, with rights to read, download and reuse under an open licence, as the Budapest Open Access Initiative defines it.
Null resultA finding of no detectable effect, which still informs future campaigns when published.
07Ethics and publication rules

Integrity is not negotiable.

  • Ethics review as required by the institutions and jurisdictions involved, before work with people begins
  • Negative findings and independent scrutiny always remain possible
  • No funder, sponsor or host can suppress a result or a limitation
  • Funding and conflicts disclosed with each publication
  • Corrections recorded as new versions

Integrity rules are set out under research integrity. The Global Risks Forum (GRF) runs a research and universities constituency for leadership dialogue. The current service level is R0, information and enquiries: an enquiry receives a reference, and the acknowledgement names the next step.

08Questions

Questions and answers.

How do we propose a collaboration?
Write to research@therisk.global with the question, your team and the kind of collaboration you propose.
Who owns joint results?
Ownership is agreed in the terms before work begins, separating background intellectual property from joint results. Publication rights are set out at the same time.
Can students join a collaboration?
Yes, under supervision and the learning and safeguarding rules described for experts, volunteers and students.
Does GCRI fund research?
Resource decisions are part of each protocol. GCRI does not publish a general research funding call unless one is opened with its terms.

Start with an enquiry.

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
