Working groups

The National Working Groups (NWG) carry out the expert work of a National Nexus programme. Experts, practitioners, students and volunteers take on bounded, supervised assignments, each with stated prerequisites, review points and closure criteria. The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI) supports the working groups with methods, tools and supervision standards. Assignments follow competence, ordinary participation has no fee and no one takes a task they are not qualified for. Return to National Nexus.

01In brief

The short answer.

The National Working Groups (NWG) carry out the expert work of a National Nexus programme through bounded, supervised assignments for experts, practitioners, students and volunteers, each with prerequisites, review points and closure criteria. GCRI supports them with methods, tools and supervision standards, and assignments follow competence; no working group is constituted yet.

02Geography

03Steps

How an assignment works.

  1. 01

    Explore work calls

Current work calls state the task, prerequisites and expected time.

  2. 02

    Competence and availability

Contributors are matched on competence and availability.

  3. 03

    Bounded assignment

Each assignment has a supervisor, review points and closure criteria.

  4. 04

    Review and record

Work is reviewed and kept as a contribution record.

  5. 05

    Recognition and next step

Recognition and the next assignment follow the record.

04Who takes part

Four kinds of contributor.

Experts

Senior experts

Domain specialists, reviewers and technical leads.

Practitioners

Practitioners

Operators and professionals bringing working knowledge.

Students

Students and early-career researchers

Supervised tasks with a mentor and a learning plan.

Volunteers

Volunteers

Safe, bounded tasks with clear supervision.

05Safeguards

Supervision and fair terms.

  • Ordinary participation has no fee. Paid work, internships and fellowships are separate arrangements.
  • Unqualified contributors never take safety-critical tasks, and no one gets an unsupervised high-consequence assignment.
  • Six domain response teams sit under the working groups for preparedness, observation, verification, mapping, exercises and learning. They are not emergency services or incident command.
  • Safeguarding concerns use a restricted route.
06Work types

Typical kinds of assignment.

Assignments come from the national agenda and the year's missions. They include source qualification and data stewardship, mapping and geospatial analysis, model building and testing, literature and evidence review, exercise support and observation, and drafting sections of country editions for review. Each assignment states the competence it requires and how the work will be reviewed.

07Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
National working groupA team formed within a national programme to deliver one defined piece of work, under terms of reference and a workplan, with no authority beyond them.
Terms of referenceThe document that defines an assignment's objectives, scope, deliverables, counterpart, acceptance criteria and reserved decisions.
Competence frameworkA structured description of the skills and knowledge a role requires, such as ESCO.
08Status

No working group is constituted.

No national programme is recorded as constituted or active, so no country's desk, model or portfolio is shown as operating. The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. Contributors can register interest at experts@therisk.global; see also Experts, volunteers and students. Safeguarding concerns go to safeguarding@therisk.global. The communities run by The Global Risks Forum (GRF) for experts are on Experts and working communities.

09Questions

Questions and answers.

Do I have to pay to join a working group?
No. Ordinary participation has no fee.
Will I be paid?
Ordinary participation is unpaid. Paid work, internships and fellowships are separate arrangements with their own terms.
How much time does an assignment take?
Each work call states the expected time and the review points. Contributors take assignments that fit their availability and can close an assignment under its stated closure criteria.
Do the response teams respond to emergencies?
No. They support preparedness, observation, verification, mapping, exercises and learning. They are not emergency services. In immediate danger, contact your local emergency services.

Start with an enquiry.

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
