Observatory

The Observatory is the public observational layer of the Nexus Ecosystem: signals drawn from earth observation, public datasets and reported sources, published with the limits of the data they come from. The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI) stewards it as part of its evidence work. An observation is a starting point for analysis, not a finding, a forecast or a warning, and every signal says what kind of evidence it is. Return to Nexus Ecosystem.

01In brief

The short answer.

The Observatory is the public observational layer of the Nexus Ecosystem: signals drawn from Earth observation, public datasets and reported sources, published with the limits of their data. An observation is a starting point for analysis, not a finding, forecast or warning, and every signal says what kind of evidence it is.

02Geography

Landscapes and remoteness in Central America.

Mountain ranges, deserts, wetlands, glaciers and reefs, and how remote each division is from large cities, shown for Central America as an example geography for this subject.

03Sources

Where observations come from.

Earth observation

Satellite and aerial data

Search, processing and change evidence through the EOP system, without any implied authority to order paid acquisition.

Data

Public and reported datasets

Fused, versioned and traced through the GRIx system, with source rights and limitations kept attached.

Instruments

Measurement

Instrument and calibration evidence where an authorized scope exists.

04Limits

What every signal must say about itself.

Source data is uneven between countries, seasons and sensors. A signal that hides those differences would mislead, so each one carries its own description.

  • Its evidence label: observed, officially reported, institution-reported, estimated, modelled, forecast, scenario, expert judgement or unknown.
  • Its source, date, resolution and known gaps; missing data is shown as missing, never as zero.
  • Its rights: what may be reused, by whom and under which licence.
  • Its interpretation limits, such as cloud cover, revisit time, reporting lags or sampling bias.
05Boundaries

Observation is not warning.

The Observatory does not issue warnings, alerts or official statistics. Official issuance stays with authorized parties, such as national hydrometeorological services, and public-safety work follows the boundaries on Early warning capability. Nexus is not an emergency service. The Observatory is also distinct from Nexus Observatory Inc., the intended technology licensor of the Nexus Foundry code, which has no role in programme decisions or publication.

06Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
ObservatoryA standing function that monitors a set of indicators and signals over time and publishes what it observes with its sources and confidence.
Observing systemThe combination of instruments and platforms that systematically measures a variable.
Early warning signalA statistical change, such as rising variance or slower recovery, that can precede a regime shift.
Evidence labelA tag on an assertion naming the kind of evidence behind it, such as observed, officially reported or modelled.
07Publication

Where signals are published.

Reviewed signals are designed to appear in the Observatory Signal series of Nexus Reports. No signal is listed as released yet. The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. Related science is on Earth observation; for how such evidence reaches financial questions, see The Global Risks Alliance (GRA) on Models and professional methods.

08Questions

Questions and answers.

Does the Observatory monitor people?
No. It works with environmental, infrastructure and public datasets under their rights. Signal work is limited to authorized observation, with no unauthorized collection.
Can I rely on an Observatory signal for an emergency decision?
No. Use official warnings from the competent authority. In immediate danger, contact your local emergency services.
Which countries does the Observatory cover?
Observation follows the research scope of the six programme regions, subject to source availability and rights. Where a source does not cover a place or period, the gap is stated rather than filled.
Is the Observatory run by Nexus Observatory Inc.?
No. Nexus Observatory Inc. is the intended licensor of the Foundry code to GCRI Canada and has no role in programme decisions or publication.

Start with an enquiry.

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
