Communities and civil society

Communities, civil society organizations, unions and public-interest groups know things about risk that no model captures: where water floods first, which services fail, who is left out. The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI) offers accessible, consent-aware routes for communities to contribute local knowledge, challenge findings and raise concerns, with safeguards that protect people and their knowledge. No membership or account is needed to report harm or correct public information. This page is part of Work with GCRI.

04Safeguards

Consent and protection come first.

  1. 01

    Informed consent

You are told how your contribution will be used before you share it, and you can decline.

  2. 02

    Protected knowledge

Protected community and Indigenous knowledge never enters public examples or model training.

  3. 03

    Co-design for rights-holders

Indigenous and rights-holder institutions can co-design a programme, with a knowledge-use schedule, a benefit plan and withdrawal conditions.

  4. 04

    Withdrawal

You can withdraw future participation, and the record shows how earlier contributions are handled.

  5. 05

    Safe routes

Safeguarding concerns use a restricted route, described under safeguarding and complaints.

TermDefinition
Local knowledgeUnderstanding of hazards and coping developed by communities through experience and tradition.
Free, prior and informed consentThe right of Indigenous peoples to give or withhold consent, without coercion, in advance and with full information, to measures that affect their lands, territories and rights, as the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples sets out.

07Accessibility

Taking part should not require expertise or technology.

Contributions can be short and in plain language. If you need another format or language support, say so in your message and we will try to arrange it. The site is designed to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA; barriers can be reported as described under accessibility. The current service level is R0, information and enquiries: an enquiry receives a reference, and the acknowledgement names the next step.

The Global Risks Forum (GRF) runs a community and Indigenous constituency for leadership participation.

08Questions

Questions and answers.

Do I need to be part of an organization?
No. Individuals and informal groups can contribute or raise concerns. Organizations may also take part institutionally through a national programme where one exists.
Will my contribution be published?
Only with your consent and in the form you agree. Personal details are not published, and protected knowledge stays protected.
Is there a cost?
No. There is no fee to contribute, challenge or raise a concern.
What if my community disagrees with a GCRI finding?
Tell us, with what you know. The challenge is reviewed, recorded and answered with reasons, and an accepted point leads to a correction.
