Welcome to the National Stakeholders Identification Thread for India!
This thread identifies and maps critical stakeholders across sectors to support climate action, disaster risk reduction (DRR), biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development efforts in India. We aim to engage relevant actors to mobilize climate finance and strengthen partnerships for the Global Risks Forum 2025 and other global frameworks, including the Santiago Network for Loss and Damage.

How You Can Contribute: Identify Stakeholders Across the Quintuple Helix Framework
1- Academia and Research: Universities, think tanks, and research institutions focusing on sustainability, climate policy, DRR, and biodiversity in India.
Example: Institutions like the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), climate research departments at major universities, and think tanks like TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute).

2- Industry and Business: Corporations, startups, and financial institutions involved in renewable energy, green technologies, and climate finance.
Example: Solar energy companies, green tech startups, financial institutions offering sustainable investment products, and industries transitioning to cleaner production practices.

3- Civil Society and NGOs: Non-profits, advocacy groups, and community organizations working on conservation, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable development.
Example: NGOs like WWF-India, SEEDS (Sustainable Environment and Ecological Development Society), and community groups focusing on biodiversity conservation or disaster resilience.

4- Government and Public Sector: National and state government agencies involved in climate policy, environmental regulations, and disaster management.
Example: Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), and state-level environment ministries.

5- Natural Environment: Organizations managing ecosystems, protected areas, and promoting biodiversity conservation across India.
Example: National parks management bodies, forest departments, and conservation initiatives focusing on wildlife and habitat preservation.

    • Hello everyone, please share your views:

Organization Name/Individual: Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore

      Sector: Academia and Research

      Role in Climate Action/DRR/Biodiversity:
      – The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, is deeply involved in several critical environmental and biodiversity conservation efforts. IISc has played a major role in researching ecosystem-based approaches to climate change, focusing on areas like carbon sequestration and biodiversity. For example, IISc researchers have been involved in long-term ecological monitoring projects, such as the Mudumalai Forest Dynamics Plot, which studies tropical forest ecology in the Western Ghats, a biodiversity hotspot.
      – Additionally, IISc contributes to national initiatives aimed at assessing climate vulnerability and adaptation strategies. The institute was pivotal in a national climate vulnerability assessment project, which identified the states most vulnerable to climate change and helped in guiding policy decisions on climate adaptation. Professor N.H. Ravindranath from IISc, a noted expert on climate change, has been actively involved in these efforts, ensuring that scientific research is translated into actionable frameworks for climate adaptation in India.
      – IISc also leads research on the impacts of climate change on ecosystems and the management of critical ecological thresholds, with the goal of informing both national policies and international frameworks like the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
